Smart meters are the next generation of gas and electricity meter, which communicate between your home and your energy supplier using a secure wireless network. As part of its plan to update the UK’s energy system, the Government wants every home in Great Britain to be fitted with smart meters by the end of 2020. By then we should all be able to see how much energy we’re using and what it costs. More than four million smart meters have already been installed across Britain, out of a total 53 million!
Benefits of smart meters include:
- they allow your energy supplier to read your meter remotely and bill you for your actual energy use – in other words you won’t have to read your own meter any more or wait in for a meter reader
- they show you in pounds and pence how much gas and electricity you’re using, more or less in real time
- you will receive accurate bills and only pay for the energy you use – in other words no more estimated bills in future!
- they make swapping between energy providers even easier so you can take advantage of the lowest rates.
It won’t cost you anything to have a smart meter installed and your energy supplier will let you know when they plan to install one in your home.
