National Apprenticeship Week 2020: Jamie Foss

Jamie is 20 years old and currently on a plumbing apprenticeship based in Derby. Here’s what his journey has been like at Metworks, MTVH’s in-house repairs and maintenance team who look after all our properties across London and the East-Midlands.

Tell us a little about your apprenticeship and why you chose it?
My apprenticeship is a level 2 plumbing apprenticeship. I currently study once a week at Derby College and I chose it as I like practical work and problem solving.

How did you hear about apprenticeship?
I came across this apprenticeship while browsing through apprenticeships schemes on the GOV.UK website.

What has your journey been like?
My overall journey has been challenging and enjoyable which is a good balance.

What do you hope to achieve from this experience?
I aim to achieve a level 2 qualification in plumbing from this experience.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
I would have to say what I enjoy most is that no day is the same. There’s various problems to solve, different places to visit and new faces to meet.

What type of skills have you developed?
I feel that I have gained confidence, developed time management and independent working skills.

How has this apprenticeship impacted your life?
This apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to work as part of a team and some insight into other trades! It has strengthened my communication skills which have impacted me personally allowing me to feel better about myself.

Do you believe it has prepared you for future goals?
Definitely! The apprenticeship has not only taught me that not all jobs will go as planned but it has also helped me understand and prepare for challenges in the future.

What advice would you give to those who are thinking about taking apprenticeships like this?
I would recommend doing an apprenticeship to others as it allows you to get more hands on experience. It is a great step for learning and developing key skills at the same time which is essential for all career paths.
