Handyperson Service

Who is the handyperson service for?

It’s for people who live in Camden who are over 65, or have a disability or mental health condition.

You do not need to be an MTVH resident to use this service.

What we can do for you?

The team can help with things like:

  • Minor home repairs and maintenance
  • Security measures
  • Home safety checks
  • Minor plumbing jobs

We can also make sure that your home is safe for you to go back to when you’re discharged from hospital.

Services will be free if you have been referred by Camden Council’s warmth, income, safety and health services (WISH), otherwise services are charged at £12.50 per hour, plus materials.

Adaptation and Grants Service

Our Home Adaptation and Grants Service is for people who live in Camden and have a disability. It helps them to:

  • Adapt their home so they can keep living independently. Adaptations could include a level access shower, stair lift, ceiling track hoist and access.
  • Apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant to pay for the works – depending on your income, you may need to pay towards the cost of the work to your home.

We can help you whether you live in a housing association property, rent your home from a private landlord or own your home.

You do not need to be an MTVH resident to use this service.

How it works

This is the process:

  • You’ll need a referral from an Occupational Therapist. If you need a referral, self refer to Camden Council’s Adult Social Care on 020 7974 4000 and pick option 1, Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.
  • Our surveyor will draw up a design based on your Occupational Therapist’s recommendations.
  • We’ll find the right builder to complete the works and manage the project for you until they’re finished.

Paying for work

With so many grants, loans and funding schemes available, things can get a bit confusing or seem really daunting! However, there’s no need to worry – we have many years’ experience of helping our customers make sense of what financial help is out there and can also help you through the application process. You may of course also use your own personal savings to fund work.

Again, because of how funding is allocated across local authorities in England, the options available will depend on where you live. Options include:

  • Warmer homes, healthier living
This scheme helps fund heating repairs and replacement for people with long-term health needs.
  • Handyperson service
This service is available to older people and people with disabilities in Haringey. It helps customers maintain their independence by carrying out minor repairs and small adaptations.
  • Gardening Service
We offer subsidised gardening service at £15.00 per hour including fencing and gate repairs.
