Canalside

Canalside was set up by One Housing Group in partnership with Metropolitan to take the transfer of 700 homes from Hackney and regenerate the local area of Kingsland and Haggerston in 1998.

Formed from two Hackney’s most challenging estates, Haggerston East and Whitmore Estate (plus another block on the Kingsland Estate), the £65m regeneration programme took over ten years to complete and led to some dramatic changes and improvements in the local area.

The project involved the regeneration of 546 homes, together with the demolition of a number of existing blocks and the construction of 168 new houses and flats. A mixture of rented units, key worker, shared ownership and homes for outright sale were either built or improved during the regeneration.

We worked closely with the Estate Development Management Committees to agree:

  • Plans for renewal and refurbishment of homes
  • Design issues
  • Housing management policies (such as decanting, transfers, rent arrears, estate standards and equal opportunities)
  • Repairs and maintenance service
  • Economic regeneration activities

Canalside is governed by a community board to ensure local accountability.
